How Do You Know If an ADHD Tool Is Actually Working?
A new productivity tool can feel incredibly effective when it's still novel.
You're checking it frequently. You're excited about organizing it. You're thinking about the new system.
But the real test begins after the novelty wears off.
Instead of continually asking whether something is a "good ADHD tool," it can be more useful to ask whether the tool is doing the job you need it to do.

The ADHD Tool Test™
1. Job — What problem did you hire it to solve?
A planner may help organize tasks and time without solving task initiation. A reminder may successfully remind you without creating motivation. Identify the executive-functioning problem before blaming the tool.
2. Friction — How difficult is it to use?
The more steps required to capture, organize, retrieve, and act on information, the more opportunities there are for the system to break down—especially on lower-capacity days.
3. Visibility — Do you remember it exists?
Information isn't helpful if you don't reliably encounter it again. Ask what prompts you to return to the tool rather than depending on yourself to remember to check it.
4. Follow-Through — Does information become action?
Look for where the chain breaks:
Thought → Tool → Decision → Action
That break can tell you whether the problem is capture, clarification, scheduling, activation, or something else.
5. Real Use — Are you actually using it?
Evaluate the system based on your real behavior, not your intentions.
Don't Rebuild Everything Because One Piece Isn't Working
If one part of your system isn't functioning, identify that part before replacing everything.
Sometimes you don't need a new planner.
You need to change the job of the planner you already own.
The goal isn't to find the perfect ADHD tool. It's to understand what your brain needs the tool to do.
